Elders Advice To His Nephew (2)

When you use the drum, remember it is sacred.
What happens to the drum happens to you.
This is true for any of your traditional medicines.
Your traditional medicines include: drums, songs, regalia, feathers, tobacco, the pipe, rattles, etc. When you pick any of these sacred objects up, remember you are picking up a responsibility.
It means you have work.
It is not to make you important or honor you.
Be humble.
Be grateful, and pray for your people.
Pray for all people when you pick any of these sacred objects up.
Try not to be first or stand in front.
It's not about being great or the loudest.
It's about prayer and humility.
These are teachings of my family, elders and teachers.
When I was young I was not allowed to use a drum too much.
Only a little bit with adult supervision.
I was not allowed to have one.
I was too young.
My path was not confirmed yet.
What life would I choose?
