This morning I was folding the last of our clothes at Bubbles Laundromat in Everett, listening as two ladies of my acquaintance spoke of their early school years.
"Yes. The Nuns were much better teachers than the Jesuit priests."
Then my turn came.
"There was a Jesuit who taught at Cal Berkeley and lived at our parish house. I used to serve mass for him." I said. "He promised me that if I waited till I graduated from High School he would get me a full scholarship to Notre Dame and then to the Jesuit Seminary."
"Did you take him up on it?" One lady asked.
"No. I went right into a local seminary. I only lasted one year." I replied.
"I finally chose to ennoble my Native American part and came to realize the truth."
"Which is?"
"That Coyote made the world, of course."
"But isn't Coyote seen to be the Trickster?"....pause...then this light bulb went off in her head and her mouth dropped open and she smiled this great big smile....aha...
